Mineral Resources Minister
State mining company, South African Minerals & Exploration Company, will focus on the supply of energy minerals such as coal, mineral resources minister Susan Shabangu said.
Shabangu said on Wednesday that the company, which was formed in February, had landed a contract to supply the national electricity company Eskom with coal. The contract should begin in late June.
When President Jacob Zuma has announced the formation of the company said it will focus on mineral policy not specified.
The company, which is owned jointly by the departments of minerals and energy, Eskom is expected to start supply of about 800,000 tons of coal in June. Production could be stepped up to 1680000 tons, with the ability to nearly double to three million tonnes in the future.
Shabangu said that an interministerial working group composed of representatives of energy and minerals, and society itself would map out the future of society.
